Saturation of surface roughening instabilities by plastic deformation

چکیده
Surface roughening instabilities driven by a competition between elastic and surface energy contributions are shown to be saturated by plastic energy dissipation. It is shown that these morphological instabilities do not experience unbounded growth as predicted by consideration of elastic energy alone and that their growth is limited by dislocation emission from higher curvature grooves. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Quantification of Deformation-induced Surface Roughening Using Modified Roughness Parameters and Fourier Filtering
Surfaces of metal sheets initially contain high frequency, low amplitude roughness components imparted during the rolling process. When plastic deformation is imposed, the amplitude of these free surface components increases, producing various kinds of morphological features including randomness, periodicity and waviness. The features often control key functional aspects of a metal surface, suc...
متن کاملA study of surface roughening in fcc metals using direct numerical simulation
Grain-scale surface roughening due to plastic straining in polycrystalline aluminum is studied with the aid of a three-dimensional finite-element crystal-plasticity model. An improved understanding of the origin of surface roughening profiles in plastically strained aluminum is sought. Large-scale, Direct Numerical Simulation enables the computation of full-field solutions and the explicit cons...

Scanningelectron microscopy (SEM) has been utilized to examine the morphology and topography alterations in the surface of Poly(Lactic Acid)(PLA) fabrics due to UV/Ozoneirradiation. In the past decade, a growing attention in the usage of “Green Techniques” in industrial applications has been observed owing to many benefits such as low impurities and their relatively low cost to substitute th...
متن کاملSurface Roughening Behavior of 6063 Aluminum Alloy during Bulging by Spun Tubes
Severe surface roughening during the hydroforming of aluminum alloy parts can produce surface defects that severely restrict their application in the automobile and aerospace industry. To understand the relation between strain, grain size and surface roughness under biaxial stress conditions, hydro-bulging tests of aluminum alloy tubes were carried out, and the tubes with different grain sizes ...
متن کاملLowering coefficient of friction in Cu alloys with stable gradient nanostructures
The coefficient of friction (COF) of metals is usually high, primarily because frictional contacts induce plastic deformation underneath the wear surface, resulting in surface roughening and formation of delaminating tribolayers. Lowering the COF of metals is crucial for improving the reliability and efficiency of metal contacts in engineering applications but is technically challenging. Refini...
